Why Jesus Christ and the Cross?
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009Thoughts About God
Friday, March 13th, 2009To begin with, what can we know about God? The Bible teaches that God is holy and righteous; consequently, sin cannot exist in His presence. It further states that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), So where does that leave you and me?
Recent articles in the local paper were addressing how everything in the world got started. One writer was attributing everything to the scientific method and saying there was no place for God. The other stated that it is essential to start with an eternal creator who possesses life, intelligence and power. So which is it? Common sense teaches that we must begin with something. If we eliminate God as Creator who always has existed, then we are compelled to believe in the eternal nature of matter and energy. The latter truly does stretch the imagination and requires far greater faith than does believing in the Eternal God.
Julie Andrews had it right in the Sound of Music when she sang: “Nothing comes from nothing; nothing ever could.” It is essential to start with something. The Big Bang theory along with similar approaches is saddled with the same weakness. What caused the Big Bang? Who initiated it? How did it happen?
The Biblical explanation is direct and straight forward: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). This reasonable, logical, sensible answer doesn’t require the mind of a genius to understand it.
David, the sweet singer of Israel got it right with these words: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1).
Paul, the apostle to the gentiles, astounded the Athenian philosophers with the following: “The God who made the world and everything in it is Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples made by hands” (Acts 17:24).
This simple yet profound answer from Scripture that speaks of God without beginning or conclusion fits best into my way of thinking and living. How about yours?
